Rachel Carson and the Origin of Scientific Environmentalism | AMS OpenMind
In wars, insect-borne diseases killed more than bullets. During WWII, DDT, a miraculous insecticide, was used by the Allies to annihilate millions of insects transmitting malaria and typhus, aiding troop advancement. After the war, DDT brought prosperity to agriculture, making crops more profitable than ever. But a famous writer saw unexpected consequences. Marine biologist Rachel Carson had a gift for communicating science and a passion for nature. 🌿 Her talent took her from editing radio scripts for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to becoming a successful author. Her second book, “The Sea Around Us,” was an immediate bestseller, and its film adaptation won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1953. 🎥 In the late '50s, a friend wrote to Carson about many songbirds dying near her land after a DDT spraying. This led Carson to investigate the effects of this synthetic pesticide for four years. She discovered three important phenomena: DDT kills all kinds of animals, not just pests, so it should be called a “biocide” rather than a “pesticide.” It doesn’t dissolve in water and remains in the environment for years, weakening ecosystems. DDT contaminates food by accumulating in fatty tissues, affecting human health by causing cancer and genetic damage. Carson published her findings in “Silent Spring,” a book that shocked the public and demanded the use of safe products to deal with pests. The chemical industry responded ruthlessly, even discrediting Carson personally. But many scientists supported her meticulous work. 🌍 Ten years later, the U.S. banned DDT as an agricultural chemical. However, Carson’s vision went beyond pesticides. She wanted society to control its impact on ecosystems and led a global environmental campaign based on facts, not just feelings. 🌱 #RachelCarson #SilentSpring #Environmentalism #DDT #ScienceHistory #Nature #Conservation #Education #learnsomethingnew A video by @scienseed4294 Ventana al conocimiento

Environmental justice, explained
We already know that pollution and climate change negatively affect people’s health and quality of life. But we’re not always clear about which people are most exposed and impacted. The harm that comes with rising seas and contaminated water systems isn’t evenly distributed. To the contrary: Those who are already disadvantaged by race, wealth, and income are usually the most affected by environmental disasters. Without recognizing that inequality, we’re not always solving the problems with our water, air, and soil in ways that serve the people who need it most — which is why environmental justice is a critical part of planning a green future that’s good for everyone. If you’ve never heard the term “environmental justice” before, or if you just want to know more about it, watch our video above.

One Earth - Environmental Short Film
One Earth is an environmental short film I created and edited to help raise awareness about our impact on our environment. It tells the story of how we globally and massively around the world use resources for short term profit, by deforestating, mining, burning fossil fuels, consuming and ever expanding. Our lifestyle leads to the many environmental issues we face today in 2024, including global pollution, climate change, and the massive extinction of animal species. 00:00 Introduction 00:28 One Earth Short Film 03:51 End Credits I am the composer, producer and mix engineer of the music you can hear in this video. Environmental Racism Is the New Jim Crow
Communities of color face disproportionate rates of natural disaster and environmental harm. Staff writer Vann R. Newkirk II argues that discrimination in public planning is to blame. “Pollution and the risk of disaster are assigned to black and brown communities through generations of discrimination and political neglect,” says Newkirk II. The environment is a system controlled and designed by people—and people can be racist. Subscribe to The Atlantic on YouTube: http://bit.ly/subAtlanticYT

The latest science on climate tipping points
In the latest science on climate tipping points, there are 16 main systems at risk. These systems regulate the climate on Earth. They have been stable and resilient for 10,000 years, enabling humans to flourish. Within each system is a tipping point - push them too far, and they will irreversibly shift from supporting humanity to undermining humanity. Today….from the Arctic to the Amazon the majority of these systems are showing signs of destabilization. At 1.5°C we are likely to cross four tipping points. This will change the world as we know it. Yet every month, we use 1% of the remaining carbon budget for 1.5ºC. Every. Single. Month. It's time to change our actions and change our systems so that we can ensure a safe and just future.
